Topic: Mercury Outboard Water Pump Impellers

Question: I’m in Cervantes Western Australia and in need of this impeller and possibly a whole new water pump kit for my Mercury 115 Hp Outboard Motor.

Response:  Here are the links I used to search this specific model of 115 Hp Outboard for you. When you enter the Mercury Marine Serial Number after following the first link, you then just select that particular engine model that is returned. I then went to the gear housing assembly diagram to locate the water pump. This outboard diagram shows the individual water pump components including the impeller, wear plate, seals, etc. It’s typically more economical to order the complete outboard water pump kit which is listed at the bottom of the parts listings on the left-hand side of the page.

Mercury Marine Warning System

The outboard warning system incorporates a warning horn inside the boat. The warning horn may be located inside the remote control or connected to the ignition key switch.

WARNING HORN SIGNALS

When the key switch is turned to the “ON” position, the horn will turn on for a moment as a test to show the horn is working.

The warning horn will emit either a continuous beep or intermittent short beeps. This will alert the operator and help identify the following listed situations. For visual display of the specific engine functions and for additional engine data, refer to SmartCraft Product information, following.

Warning Horn
Function	Sound	Description
Water in Fuel	Four Beeps every 2 Minutes	Water in the water separating fuel filter reaches the full level. Water can be removed from the filter. Refer to Maintenance – Fuel System for filter removal.
Cooling System Problem	Continuous	Engine Guardian System is activated. Power limit will vary with level of overheat. Shift outboard into neutral and check for a steady stream of water coming out of the water pump indicator hole. If no water is coming out of the water pump indicator hole or flow is intermittent, stop engine and check water intake holes for obstruction. The Guardian System must be RESET before engine will operate at higher speeds. Moving throttle lever back to idle resets the system.
Oil Level is Critically Low	Continuous	Engine Guardian System is activated. Power will be limited. The oil level is critically low in the engine mounted oil reservoir. Refill the engine mounted oil reservoir along with the remote oil tank.
Oil Pump Failure	Continuous	Engine Guardian System is activated. Power will be limited. The warning horn is activated if the oil pump should ever stop functioning electrically. No lubricating oil is being supplied to the engine.

ENGINE GUARDIAN SYSTEM

The Engine Guardian System monitors the critical sensors on the engine for any early indications of problems. The system will respond to a problem by emitting a continuous beep and/or reducing engine power in order to provide engine protection.

If Guardian System has been activated, reduce throttle speed. The horn will turn off when throttle speed is within the allowable limit. Consult your dealer for assistance.

SMARTCRAFT PRODUCT

A Mercury SmartCraft System instrument package can be purchased for this outboard. A few of the functions the instrument package will display are engine RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, fuel consumption and engine operating hours.

The SmartCraft Instrument package will also aid in Engine Guardian diagnostics. The SmartCraft Instrument package will display critical engine alarm data and potential problems.

How to Enter Your Mercury Marine or Mercruiser Part Number

Due to the variety of Mercury Marine part numbering formats if you don’t initially locate your Mercury part when using the website search feature, try removing the prefix and/or suffix of the Mercury or Mercruiser Part number you trying to locate. Unlike Suzuki Outboard Part Numbers and Yamaha Outboard Part Numbers, a;though its is normally shown with the Part Numbers Mercury Marine does NOT include the prefix as part of the actual part number. For example rather than searching for p/n 84-123456A 8 try searching for just 123456 and then locate your particular part number from all of the available matches that are returned in the search results. This allows you to drill down to the correct version of the part you are looking for. In many cases you’ll notice the part number you are searching for has changed and been “superseded” up to a newer, more current version of the part.

Example: Mercury Marine part number 10-40095 16. If you enter the part number exactly as formatted including the ‘-‘ after the prefix and the ‘space’ before the suffix, it will return the proper search result. However if you enter this as 10-4009516 (without the space before the 16 suffix) it WILL NOT show the proper search results. Alternatively, if you enter just the 40095 it will pull up all variations of Part Numbers that use this string of numbers; not just Mercury but other manufacturers as well. Although this can be a problem when the “shortened version” of the Mercury part number you enter returns a high volume of possible matches, but in certain cases it’s the only way to drill down and determine the current version of the part number you are searching for. You can then select the link to the matching product/part number to see the full list of models the part number is used on so you can verify if your particular engine or sterndrive model is shown to be associated to that part number.

The History of Mercury Marine Part Number Formats & Changes

Mercury Marine and MerCruiser used a specific part numbering system for many years, however this has since changed. Most of the newer Mercury and Mercruiser part numbers will follow the “8M1234567” style numbering format. Up until a few years ago Mercury Marine Part Numbers had a PREFIX followed by a set of numbers ranging between 4 and 6 digits which may or may not have then been followed by a SUFFIX.

Prefix Usage: The purpose of prefixes was to designate marine part classification codes for internal company purposes. The following 4 prefixes are just a few of the many prefixes Mercury Marine utilized.

• 10 – prefix applied to Fasteners
• 11 – prefix applied to Nuts
• 12 – prefix applied to Washers
• 22 – prefix applied to Fittings
• 32- prefix applied to hoses, tubes and lines

Suffix Usage: These were used to indicate products such as a “C” being used to designate a casting or “A” being an assembly or Q representing the Quicksilver version of the part. For example 123456A1 could represent an assembly level part made from a 123456C casting. Then the 123456A2 could represent a slightly different assembly version altogether that was made from the same casting. For example, the A1 may part have included a certain fitting already inserted into the casting while the A2 version included the same casting but with a different size of fitting.

Popular Mercury Marine Mercruiser Part Numbers and Formats

• 32-44348001 – Note that even though this is an exhaust bellows it still uses the 32- prefix because Mercury calls it a tube. Also, note that the original part number was 32-44348T but this then changed or “superseded” to the current 32-44348001 where they repalced the “T” suffix with the “001” suffix.
• 78458A 1 – This Mercruiser part number uses the A 1 suffix (assembly) because it includes the tube and the hose clamp. However, they were not consistent in using the 32- prefix with this part number.
• 866340K01 – Note the “K” suffix in this part number.
• 850399 1 – Note how this part has been replaced by 8M0113734
• 860246A15 – Note this is the “Hot Dipped” version of the exhaust manifold and has the “A15 suffix.
• 860246Q11 – Note this is the same Mercruiser Exhaust Manifold with the “Q11” suffix this designates that it is the lower cost Quicksilver version of the manifold.

A recent test done with a Key West 219FS proved it could go from 0 to planing speed in just 5.7 seconds and hit 30 mph in 10.7 seconds while carrying 3 men and a half tank of fuel. It topped out at 44.8 mph while turning a 1.5 inch x 16 inch triple blade prop at 6,000 rpm.

When a pair of DF200As hit the water in a Twin V 31 Ocean Cat spinning 2.0 inch x 16 inch three blade props, it reached a top speed of 43.8 mph with 6 men on board.

The motor is the driving force behind a bboat-03oat, which is why it’s important to choose the right one. While there are literally hundreds of different gas motors available, ranging in size, power and utility, nearly all of them fall under one of two different categories: 2-stroke and 4-stroke.

The term “stroke” refers to the motor’s piston movement. In 2-stroke motors, the pistons move with one stroke in each direction. The compression stroke triggers the the combustion of fuel and air, and the return stroke pushes more of the fuel mixture back into the motor.

4-stroke motors differ in their piston movement, as it features 1 compression stroke, a return stroke, an exhaust stroke, and another return stroke. The purpose of the exhaust stroke, which is not used in 2-stroke motors, is to release the spent gas fumes through the exhaust.

In general 4 stroke motors are quieter and use slightly less fuel. Although the 2 stroke motors have significantly reduced the amount of smoke they produce, the 4 stroke motors are a cleaner burning choice. Based on these features most customers that are heavily focused on performance tend to favor the lighter 2 stroke motors whereas the customer looking for a quiet, clean and efficient burning motor such as for pontoon boat applications will lean towards the 4 stroke motor option.

Two-Stroke motors

Technical jargon aside, 2-stroke motors are generally smaller, lighter and more compact than their counterpart, making them a popular choice for small vessels. This is due to the fact that 2-stroke motors don’t require a valve train. Without a valve train hogging up valuable space, manufacturers can produce powerful 2-stroke motors which are small in size.

Not long ago, 2-stroke motors were viewed as fuel-hungry and loud when compared to 4-strokes; however, newer models have tackled this issue by eliminating the carburetor. Modern-day models use a more efficient computerized system, known as a Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), to regulate the ratio of fuel to air in place of a carburetor.

Four-Stroke motors

A typical 4 stroke motor is similar to that of a car or truck. The intake valves bring the fuel and air into the combustion chamber, and the gas vapors exit through the exhaust valve. Due to the presence of a valve train (intake and exhaust valves), however, 4-stroke motors are usually heavier and bulkier than their counterpart.

A 4-stroke motor also feature a complete lubrication system with an oil filter and drip pan. This helps to wick away heat while promoting a smooth operation. On the flipside, though, you’ll have to change the oil on a regular basis – just like you a road-worthy automobile – to keep the motor working in peak condition.

Hopefully, this will give you a better understanding of the differences between 2-stroke and 4-stroke motors. Granted, the gap between the two has closed in recent years, there are still subtle nuances that current and prospective boat owners need to be aware of.

Regularly scheduled Outboard Motor maintenance is one of the most important factors in determining the life expectancy of your engine. All of the outboard motor manufacturers including Mercury Marine, Yamaha, Suzuki and Evinrude recommend inspecting, if not replacing the water pump impeller every 1 to 2 years. It’s worth mentioning at this same time that the Inboard and Sterndrive Marine Engine manufacturer’s such as Mercruiser and Volvo Penta also recommend these same water pump impeller maintenance procures on their Marine Products as well.

When you think about the design of the standard open style Marine Cooling system you have to think about the various items that can end up getting picked up by the water pump and end up inside of the motor. Depending on the conditions you operate your boat within its not uncommon for boaters to suck up plastic bags, grass, weeds, etc all of which can limit the amount of water to the engine. The most common way a boater realizes this happening is when the alarm sounds and they shut down the motor. However by the time the alarm sounds damage may have already occurred. Understanding that this damage is cumulative in many cases, it sheds light on the importance of maintaining a properly functioning water pump impeller and cooling system. Understanding that the water pump by design functions by utilizing a specific amount of “controlled” friction between the water pump body and the impeller.  As the blades of the impeller are deformed the area changes which in effect allows the pressure to be lowered as the area inside of the pump changes from smaller to greater. This lower pressure differential is what allows water to flow in the direction from higher to lower pressure. Alas the functioning of the positive displacement water pump. However once water is limited to the water pump this friction increases exponentially between the impeller and water pump body which then introduces heat, and ultimately the breakdown of the water pump impeller. Once this happens the material characteristics of the impeller change and are such that it is no longer able to create the needed “low” pressure draw to pump water as it was designed.

Regardless of whether you run a Mercury Outboard Motor, Yamaha 4 Stroke Outboard, or Mercuiser Sterndrive motor proper cooling system maintenance is critical to the longevity of that product.

Question: I’ve always been able to locate my Mercruiser Serial Number’s however now I have a Mercury Marine Jet Motor which I need to locate and identify the serial number. This is a Jet Power Head and therefore does not have the typical transom located serial tag. Can you direct me to an alternate location for the serial on this powerhead?

Answer: The original powerhead (Mercury & Johnson/Evinrude) should have an unpainted plug somewhere on the powerhead with the serial number stamped into it (see attached photo’s). I wish it was possible for us to give you the exact location for this plug however it varies from motor to motor. For example the plug location on a V6 motor will be different versus a little inline 2 cylinder motor.
