Doug,

This is a fairly common question. The truth is that the marine engines are in fact different than the automotive variety. The "marine" engines came from the Tonawanda facility but now come from Toluca MX. The cam is different, the valve guides are different, valve seats, bore tolerancing, etc. In my experience you can use an automotive engine in a marine appication and make it functional however there are some differences and the product just won't last as long. The best example I can give you in thinking about why is how often do you run your car engine for extended periods of time at 3,500 - 4,000 rpm which is very common for a marine engine. The "Duty Cycle" requirements for a marine engine are different than automotive and therefore to make it last like it is supposed to this operating criteria is taken into account. Therefore the casting level of the block may be the same p/n however they machined the bore with greater tolerance ranges for this purpose on certain applications, made adjustments to the valve seats for extended running at laoded conditions, etc. Here's a link to more technical information.

I have a 1987 Four Winns w/4.3 TB that ended up with a cracked block. I was told that If I found a 4.3 out of a light truck app, that had the mechanical fuel pump set up,(Found a factory rebuilt 1986 4.3 w/highrise manifold,Quadrajet 4 barrl, and stainless steel headers),,,, and switched all of the bolt on components( starter,Alt, water pump, intake and carb, exhaust, ignition, freeze plugs, heads, cam, flywheel,)(basically everything but the block, rods, crank, and pistons) and use marine app gasket kits, I should be ok. Now I also plan to install some rubber shock pads between the motor and the boat under the motor mounts.. First ?,,,am I on track here? 2nd ? I cannot seem to find where the marine motor was manufactured, and if the heads and cam are compatible with the Tonwanda or the Romulus engine setup!! I've spent several hours trying to get straight answers and seem to get the marine peoples opinion, and the determined mechanic opinion, and don't know who to believe!! I just want my boat back,,,,,,for good!! Would appreciate any insite you have besides putting out 2-3 grand for a new boat motor!! Thank you!!
